Firefighters were involved in an amazing rescue in Rotherham on Nov. 1, 2009, after a man fell down his next door neighbors chimney. Incident Commander Neil Hessell said he had never seen an incident like it in over 27 years as a firefighter. The crew of fire service managers, who were staffing the Rotherham fire engine in place of striking firefighters, was called to the incident on St Johns Avenue, Masborough at 8.19pm. The initial report was to assist the Police and Ambulance services in their attempts to remove a man from the roof of the row of terraced houses. Area Manager Hessell said: We arrived to find a man in his 30s walking along the roof, throwing slates, chimney pots and television aerials onto the street below. Around six cars were damaged and there was a significant danger to the public so the street was cordoned off. Walking along the rooftops, the man eventually came to his own house before falling down the chimney breast on his next door neighbors side.

On Oct 29 2009 just after 11PM. Engine 31 arrived to find a single vehicle MVA and the car wrapped around a light pole. Firefighters worked tirelessly to free the woman from the wreckage, but this was a difficult task as the car was pinned against the pole and gave firefighters limited access. After removing the passenger door, windshield & roof, the crews jacked the car up and pushed the car away from the pole thus giving them the access they needed to free her. The patient was transported to RCH with minor injuries. Weather conditions and speed likely played a role in the crash.

Extrication after ambulance crash

Rescuers reported a near head-on collision between a pick up truck and an AMR ambulance. Investigation reveals the ambulance had two EMT's and an EMT student on board. As soon as the impact occurred the ambulance crew got out of their rig and began treating the adult male driving the pick up truck and two boys, approximate ages 10 years old, who were also in the truck. Two girls ages ten and sixteen were taken to the hospital after a water rescue in Lake City. the two girls fell into a fishing hole under a railroad tressel just west of Maple Avenue. Both girls were reportedly hit by a log while fishing. However, firefighters say their injuries are apparently minor. Rescue crews were on scene for more than an hour . The girls were in the water for 30- 45 minutes. This is the Lake City Fire Company, Lake City, PA. They operate a Kawasaki Trans 4X4 Mule off-road utility vehicle and an 'ATR-2' All Terrain Res-Q Trailer, to safely effect rescues like this.

The Inforcer is a firefighter forcible entry simulator that allows fire servce personnel to train on six forcible entry techniques. Inward/Outward swinging doors, drop bar bolt cuts, dead bolt cuts, hinge cuts and padlock breaking. It allows firefighters to also practice the use of a cutoff saw and common hand tools, like the halligan, flat head axe and sledgehammer.
